Saudi Aramco has begun production at its offshore Hasbah natural gas field, according to a company statement.

The field is located 150 kilometres north east of Jubail in the Arabian Gulf. The field contains seven wells which will produce a combined 1.3 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day.

Hasbah is a sour gas field, meaning that the gas it contains is rich in hydrogen sulphide and other naturally occurring toxins. These toxins must be removed from the gas before it is sent to market.

The gas will be processed at the Wasit processing plant and will be used for power generation as the region moves into the high demand summer season, when air conditioning usage soars.

Saudi Arabia has the 3rd biggest reserves of natural gas in the Middle East, behind Qatar and Iran.
