The entire fleet of 30 Super Pumas operating in the UK have been grounded the Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed. the immediate action applies to all EC225 Super Puma models.

A spokesman for the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said:“Our thoughts are with those affected by the tragic accident in Norway.

“Following the accident the UK CAA has issued an instruction to stop any commercial passenger flights by UK operators flying the Airbus EC225LP helicopter. This mirrors action taken by the Norwegian CAA.

“The restriction does not apply to search and rescue flights.

“The accident involved a Norwegian helicopter and will therefore be investigated by the Norwegian authorities. We will offer any assistance that we can.

“We remain in close contact with all UK offshore helicopter operators to continue to assess the situation.”

Norway’s largest trade union has called for the immediate retirement of the Airbus EC225 helicopter.

“This type of helicopter needs to be retired immediately.” said Leif Sande, leader of the Energi union which has over 6000 members.

“I am deeply saddened that we are now experiencing a new helicopter accident. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are now with the families.”
