New look for industry safety awards
The yearly awards that champion the men, women and companies going the extra mile for health and safety in the oil and gas industry have had a major revamp.
Jointly organised by Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety, with Maersk Oil as principal sponsor, the annual event is now called the Offshore Safety Awards and has been given a new interactive format.
Les Linklater, executive director with Step Change in Safety, said: “This will be our sixth safety awards and the time was right for a complete refresh, to make it more about learning and sharing. Instead of the formality of previous events, this will be a more energetic affair with zoned areas for our finalists where guests can visit to hear more about the efforts that have earned finalists their place in their category. Perhaps the biggest change, however, is that voting will take place right up to the last minute and event attendees will get to play their part.”
Nominations have now opened for the awards which take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Tuesday 31 May between 8am and 1.30pm.
Mick Borwell, health, safety and environment director with Oil & Gas UK, added: “What remains unchanged are our award categories which always prove popular. This year we hope to attract even more entrants from people working on and offshore who are working hard to make the North Sea as safe as it can be.”
The categories in the Offshore Safety Awards are:
• Safety Leadership – for an inspirational leader who motivates and engages their team to work safely.
• Safety Representative of the Year – for an enthusiastic and committed safety rep that is driving the safety agenda at their worksite.
• Innovation in Safety – for a company which has put in place a clever process or technique to improve safety either across an organisation or at an individual worksite.
• Workforce Engagement – for an individual or team which has actively embraced engagement with its workers on safety matters, showing how a commitment to worker involvement in safety has contributed to an improvement in safety performance.
• Occupational Health – for an individual/team or company which has taken steps to implement health policies/practices of proven effectiveness to improve the health of its workforce. This could be by implementing an existing policy particularly effectively, or by introducing new practices
• Sharing and Learning – for an individual/team or company that can demonstrate a learning and sharing culture either within their organisation, or who has made a significant contribution to health and safety through active participation in, or engagement with Oil & Gas UK or Step Change in Safety.
