Passengers are facing major delays after the runway was shut at Aberdeen International Airport on Wednesday.

Flights in and out of the airport have been cancelled or delayed due to “damage” to a small section of the tarmac.

The runway was closed at around 5pm after the issue was detected at the Dyce airport.

Engineers are now working to fix the problem and the runway has been shortened to allow some outbound flights to take off.

A small number of arrivals are also expected to be able to land.

Heavy rain and fog are also said to be hampering repair efforts.

A spokesman for the airport said: “We are currently experiencing disruption to services due to damage to a very small section of tarmac at the south end of the runway.

“As a safety precaution, we have promulgated a a shorter available runway length than normal and consequently will have a limited number of departures and arrivals.

“A repair is under way, however we are having to contend with low visibility weather conditions.

“We would advise passengers to check with their airline before travelling to the airport.

“We will continue to update our website and social media channels as more information becomes available.”

In January, the runway was shortened after a huge hole appeared in the tarmac in the wake of Storm Frank.

Planes had to be diverted as emergency repairs were carried out.
