Double North Sea Drama As Helicopter Down-Manning Workers Makes Emergency Landing

Graphic for News Item: Double North Sea Drama As Helicopter Down-Manning Workers Makes Emergency Landing

A Babcock Helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at Sumburgh Airport yesterday evening during the course of down-manning workers from BP’s Magnus Platform.

The Magnus Platform lost primary power yesterday after smoke and fumes were seen coming from an electrical box on board the installation. The rig is now operating on emergency generators and the loss of primary power systems resulted in the emergency down manning of 38 workers from the platform.

More drama unfolded for the down-manned workers as one of the helicopters laden with 16 passengers on board had a CHIP warning light illuminate, indicating a potential engine fault. Babcocks pilots followed standard procedures and idled the affected engine whilst declaring a pan-pan and making an emergency landing at Sumburgh Airport.

The BBC earlier today reported that the aircraft experienced an engine shutdown, but Oil and Gas People can confirm that the aircraft landed with both engines operational – one being set to idle.

Each S92 helicopter is equipped with two engines and maintains safe flight conditions whilst operating on one engine. With one engine set to idle, the aircraft does not have the engine power to land vertically on one engine and has to perform a ‘running landing’ to land the aircraft in a safe manner.

The 16 workers were put up in accommodation in Shetland and were transported back to Aberdeen this morning.

Workers on board the Magnus platform have reported going back to work despite primary power still being offline. One worker who wished to remain anonymous stated: “They’ve got everyone out working even though we’re on emergency power, Lighting levels are insufficient and increase the likelihood of an incident”

A BP Spokesperson confirmed that a Babcock Helicopter transporting 16 workers from the Magnus Installation diverted to Sumburgh after declaring a pan-pan.

Babcock Helicopters have been approached for comment.
