BP and Shell Evacuate Staff from Gulf of Mexico Rigs
BP and Shell have evacuated non essential personel from their Gulf of Mexico platforms as a tropical storm looms threatening high winds and treacherous seas.
BP released a statement on Friday announcing it was closely monitoring the situation to “ensure the safety of our personnel and operations in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico”.
“With forecasts indicating the system could enter the Gulf of Mexico we are now taking additional steps to respond. BP has begun securing offshore facilities and evacuating non-essential personnel from our platforms and drilling rigs”
Shell revealed on Friday that they began limiting the amount of workers offshore to those directly involved in activities essential to the safety of the platform.
All drilling operations on their platforms have been suspended but production is currently unaffected, the oil major added.
