Another North Sea Oil and Gas Discovery
Operator ENGIE E&P Norge and its PL636 (Cara) partners have made a gas and oil discovery close to the Gjøa field in the North Sea.
The discovery well 36/7-4, drilled by Transocean Arctic, proved oil and gas in Agat formation. ENGIE E&P estimates the volumes of the discovery to be in the range of 4 – 11 million standard cubic meter (MSm3) of recoverable oil equivalent. This corresponds to 25 – 70 million barrels.
In ENGIE E&P’s core area
The Cara-well was drilled 6 kilometres northeast of the Gjøa field to a vertical depth of 2702 metres below mean sea level, and reached final total depth (TD) in the Åsgard formation of Lower Cretaceous.
-The discovery is situated in our core area in the North Sea, and confirms our view that even mature areas of the Norwegian Continental Shelf have an interesting exploration potential. Together with our license partners, we will now evaluate the possibility to link the discovery to existing infrastructure at the nearby Gjøa field. This will reduce both time and costs concerning a future development, says Managing Director Cedric Osterrieth in ENGIE E&P Norge
The Gjøa-platform is a semi-submersible floating production platform operated by ENGIE E&P Norge.
Good reservoir quality
Extensive data acquisition has been undertaken, including wireline logging and three successful core runs. This shows that reservoir quality is very good. In addition, a production test confirms positive production rates.
-The well provides important new information on Cretaceous reservoir distribution and quality in this area. The Cara discovery gives us also an increased understanding of the subsurface, and strengthens our view on other licenses in this area, says Head of Subsurface Raphaël Fillon.
36/7-4 is the first exploration well in production license 636. The license was awarded in the Norwegian licensing round Awards in Predefined Areas (APA) in 2011. The water depth is 349 metres. The well, drilled by Transocean Arctic, will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
The partners of the production license are ENGIE E&P Norge AS (30% and operator), Idemitsu Petroleum Norge (30%), Tullow Oil Norge AS (20%) and Wellesley Petroleum AS (20%).
