Another Blow to Aberdeen Gastronomy as Jamie’s Italian Announces Closure
Jamie Oliver today announced he is to close his Aberdeen restaurant, blaming a combination of rising Brexit cost pressures and tough trading.
Jamie Italian which is located on Union Street in the heard of the city is located in the old E&M Building. It opened in February 2013
The restaurant employs 27 staff and comes as another blow to the crippled oil city.
Jamie Oliver restaurant group are also closing 5 other restaurants across to the country and their Chief Executive Simon Blagden gave the following statement: “As every restaurant owner knows, this is a tough market and, post-Brexit, the pressures and unknowns have made it even harder.
“While our overall business is in very good shape – we finished last year with like-for-like sales growth and an increase in covers – because we refuse to compromise on the quality and provenance of our ingredients and our commitment to training and developing our staff, we need restaurants that can serve an average of 3,000 covers every week to be sustainable.”
The decision comes a few months after one of Aberdeens top restaurants Prime Cuts was forced to close late last year due to similar financial pressures caused by the oil glut looming over the city.
