AAIB Launches Investigation After Helicopter Spins on West Franklin Helideck
A spokesperson for the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has confirmed that a team of investigators will arrive in Aberdeen this week, to conduct an investigation after a CHC S92 helicopter span on the helideck of an offshore installation.
The incident where the CHC Aircraft span on the West Franklin Helideck took place on the 30th of December 2016. Oil and Gas People later gave an update on the potential causes of the incident ruling out a complete tail rotor failure.
The AAIB has now decided to launch an investigation into the incident and has dispatched a team of investigators that are expected to arrive in Aberdeen by the weekend.
The AAIB’s purpose is to improve aviation safety globally by determining the causes of air accidents and serious incidents, and making safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence. It is not to apportion blame or liability.
CHC gave the following statement:
“Our notification to the CAA, which was done immediately, follows a standard process which can trigger the involvement of the AAIB. We welcome the involvement of the AAIB. Their expertise and input will support our own ongoing investigation, which was launched on the day of the event, together with technical experts from Sikorsky (the aircraft manufacturer) to understand the failure on the aircraft. “
