Arctic Exploration Ban Reaffirmed
Norwegian Authorities have reaffirmed a ban on oil and gas exploration in it’s Arctic regions.
The decision seems to dispel rumours that the area was to be opened up for drilling in the run-up to national elections in 2017.
It has been reported that the oil and Energy Ministry has sent letters to oil companies dismissing speculation that areas including Lofoten and Vesteraalen Islands would be unlocked for exploration in the next licensing round.
The Energy Ministry also reaffirmed an earlier statement which said it was asking companies to nominate blocks for exploration in areas which are already “open” to oil and gas exploration and development on the Norwegian Shelf.
