Aberdeen No Longer Europe’s Oil Capital as Brexit Confirmed
A grey mist covered the UKs oil capital in the early hours of this morning and thunder and lightning struck only minutes after the BBC predicted the outcome of the referendum.
Announcing a 52% victory to the leave campaign the BBC confirmed the results of what could be one of the most significant votes in our history.
While the divided voice of the UK opted to leave the EU the markets reacted with the oil price crashing almost 8% and the Pound falling to levels not seen for over 30 years.
Scotland for the first time ever in any vote spoke as a whole nation with all 32 areas voting to remain, but it was a voice that would not be heard as the results continued to come in across the remainder of the UK confirming what it seems a whole nation didn’t want to hear.
Aberdeen voted by 61.1% to remain while 55% of the surrounding shire voted for the same. Across Scotland 62% opted to remain but it wasn’t enough to prevent a Brexit.
While still geographically in Europe will Aberdeen still be seen as Europe’s oil capital in the eyes of our european cousins?
The effects of the vote on the UK oil and gas industry remain to be seen but lets hope the grey mist covering the famous grey city is not a sign of things to come.
